Our Story
Spaun Drum Company is the brainchild of two men: Brian Spaun and David Pimentel who founded the company in 1996. In retrospect, their talents and interests seemed to dovetail almost perfectly into the skills needed to design and build a line of premium drums- Brian did drum repairs, refinishing, and customizing on the West Coast, while Dave was doing similar work in his hometown on the East Coast as well as working as a machinist. Both were also dedicated drummers who had a desire to build premium quality drums with innovative design features, extensive options, and incredible sonic characteristics. They met in Los Angeles at Musicians Institute where both were enrolled in the percussion program. Shortly thereafter, they formed a partnership, did design and prototype work, and by late 1996 were shipping their first kits.
Construction Philosophy - Hand Crafted not Machine Crafted
Building drums, specifically "custom drums", is more than just slapping together components and expecting them to suddenly "jump to life" when complete. Anyone can throw cheap aftermarket parts on a shell and say "I`m a drum company!" If someone dumped all the parts to make a car on your front lawn, could you make a great car? Of course not!! Maybe you could get it together and drive it a few blocks, but it`s not going to equal the quality and performance of a Maserati. It`s not simply the raw materials that make the final product. It`s the way in which those raw materials are shaped, formed and crafted by human hands.
At Spaun Drum Company we`ve designed our components with a "sonic purpose" from the beginning. Our SOLID BRASS LUG DESIGN and DOUBLE 45 DEGREE EDGES (copied by many companies, but never equaled) are just a couple examples of our designs with a "sonic purpose" which are seriously lacking in many custom drums.
Today`s drums being manufactured by the "corporate giants" are rarely touched by human hands. They have computerized machinery that handles virtually every step necessary to create a drum from beginning through completion. That`s great for speed, reducing man-hours, and fattening profits... but at what cost? At Spaun Drum Company, we believe the continuous handling of each drum is an integral part of it`s final sound. EVERY STEP OF THE WAY, THERE IS A HEART AND SOUL, AN ENERGY, THAT IS CRAFTED INTO EACH SPAUN DRUM. |

Custom Series : Maple |

With a thickness of less than 1/4" (5.5mm), our 8-ply maple shells produce a deep and resonant note. Considered the "industry standard" for professional level drums, their full-bodied response is accompanied by lasting sustain. In addition, our 100% Maple shells provide a great blend of attack and low end which is favored by many of today`s top drummers. |

Recording Series : Birch |
| |
Recording Series :: 100% Birch Shells
Check out our Recording Series drum kits. Featuring 100% Birch shells, this series expands into a realm of professional sound and quality that you`ve come to expect from Spaun. Similar in construction to our Custom Series shells, these 100% Birch shells are 8-ply with a thickness of less that 1/4" (5.5mm). 16-ply and 24-ply snare drums are also available.
Sound Characteristics include: A bright and strong attack with fat low end. The shorter decay of our 100% Birch shell makes it a very popular choice among studio musicians and record producers. These drums have great projection. Punchy, tighter, and more aggressive than maple.

Vintage Series |

With one foot in the past, yet both eyes focused on the future, we`ve combined yesterday`s classic look and sound of wood hoops with both our 100% Maple Custom Series and our 100% Birch Recording Series drums. Our wood hoops feature 10-ply, cross laminated, hard rock maple with a low profile design that offers drummers a comfortable, consistent playing angle that is similar to most metal hoop drums. Providing a warmer and more resonant sound than metal hoops, you can combine our wood hoops with our Custom Series shells for the ultimate in warm vintage tones or choose our Recording Series shells with their brighter, more aggressive sound which lend themselves nicely to the added warmth of our wood hoops. Either way, you have a beautifully classic yet modern drum kit, rich in musical qualities that will suit whatever style of music you play. |

Acrylic Series |

Our acrylic kits feature all the quality and customization you expect from Spaun. Solid Brass Lugs, Double 45 Degree Edges, and lots of sizes and color combinations. The acrylic shell produces a unique voice which is louder and emphasizes the initial attack more than their maple or birch counterparts. They have a darker, more focused note with a quick decay. Visually stunning and definitely a drum kit that will get you noticed!
